GENDER EQUALITY: A TOOL FOR SOCIETAL STABILITY

Ever wondered what the world would be like if it were all-male or all-female?

Intriguing as it might sound, it will come to a sad end of discontinuity. Even with the coexistence of several genders in the world today, much is left to be desired in terms of gender roles and equity. This begs the question of gender equality in present times.

The concept is quite self-explanatory; describing a state of equal access to resources and opportunities regardless of gender, including economic participation and decision-making. While this concept prevails to an extent, the world is still plagued by stereotypes and gender roles, which prove inhibitive to gender equality. What we forget in retaining a society that doesn’t ingrain gender equality in its fabric is that every gender has a role to play on the economic and social fronts.

In this light, the contribution of gender equality cannot be overlooked or overemphasized owing to its role in growth and development. Not only does it facilitate unity, coexistence, and healthy rivalries, but it helps to complement for lapses or incompetence between genders. For instance, there are things that naturally apply to one gender, which another might actively struggle with. In a society where gender equality prevails, the former would complement the latter’s inadequacies swimmingly. This would lead to a better and more integrated system of tackling issues. Take crime for instance, with gender equality in play, no gender would be deemed an underdog, whose rights can be easily trumped without fear or reason. Conversely, everyone would be made to pay penance equally, as there would be no excuses on grounds of gender bias.

While it’s not a given that crime and social vices can be eliminated this way, the subject does hold somewhat of a potential to lower its spread substantially. This quality among others heralded the reason for the formation of the Global Gender Gap index, which came about in 2006. The purpose of the initiative was to record gender equality, and keep track of ensuing gaps. It’s a sad realization that up until now, 14 years later, much is left to be desired. A report in 2019 did mention, after all, that the subject of gender equality might be unattainable for another 99 years. By any means, this doesn’t bode well for the foreseeable future as growth and progress will remain stunted.

In summary, the marginalization of any gender is merely society stifling its own progress, as the process is too much of a burden for any one gender. We saw it in the years before women were allowed suffrage, and we might yet experience something similar if gender equality isn’t embraced.

  2. The last paragraph summarizes the crippling effect of gender inequality on any society.

One of the contributory factors, I believe, to this seemingly unattainable gender inequality is the nascence of toxic feminism. The movement is spearheaded such that it connotes war on the menfolk.

As you may well be aware, instances abound on Facebook. Over the years we have had many hashtags to this effect. The #Metoo movement was one of many instances.

    1. Well, the version of Facebook feminism is a topic for another day until then let's see the need to exist in peace upholding same goal - societal development.

  3. This is so true! For society to grow, there has to be equality of sexes.

  4. Like you said, every gender has it's role to play... For me I don't see why there should be equality. I'm not saying each gender should be marginalized but rather compliment each other and work towards a better society.

    1. Dear, this is it: if a woman feels fit to do the so called thing that belongs to a man, then she should. The fight for feminism is a good one; it's justice.

    2. Complimenting each other isn't a bad idea either. But we should accept our differences and find a meeting point for coexisting. Life shouldn't be that hard.

  5. Real concept out here... gender equality is a significant issue that has not been tackled and with current situations, will not be anytime soon.

  7. One very thing I do understand is that gender equality is something that cannot be generally agreed upon.
No matter how hot the debate could be, some folks wouldn't agree that everyone should be treated equal(male and female).

    1. True. It's one topic that commands different opinions from different persons both based on gender, religion and tribe.

The thing is: we need to see each other as humans first before coexistence in peace can be achieved. That's like a narrow path.😁😁
      Either way, we move! ☺️🙌🏼

  8. I read this twice. It was that brilliant an article.
My beliefs however, are in line with the statistics of the matter; I don't believe gender equality will bound anytime soon.
There has been significant improvement in our world today. For instance, there has obviously been a shift in the familial roles and responsibilities of the male and female gender. The world isn't entirely traditional anymore, but still we are not there yet. We are the generation that is going through the change and it will take time.
What we can all do, is to unlearn wrong stereotypes engrained in our minds, keep teaching and checking ourselves, and endeavour to enlighten people around us.

  9. I was reading a book that brushed me with new insights about gender generally. It talked about how the male and female counterparts exudes a varying degree of masculine and feminine traits.

It explained why it’s important to completely understand yourself to hone the prowess of your trait. Why I mentioned this here is because the idea of gender equality focuses on just one gender type. The completely dominant Male and Female. That’s why it has failed to prove effective.

Until a shared understanding is reached, that people can exude different gender trait, the pursuit will be inconclusive.

A good instance is that a guy with a dominant female trait will natural push towards feminine ambitions and vice versa. The truth here is that this guy will be pressured to act more of a guy by the society. Being harassed with every form of words to toss away his natural descent. Don’t you think he’ll fight for gender equality? So you see this is a confusing problem associated with the term.

All these mentioned doesn’t wash away the still prevalent causes. Every gender type face some degree of gender equality. My say🙂.

PS: I used a guy because that was what climbed into my mind first. Not the other way round please. Want to clarify that.
